Please see below for a list of frequently asked questions about Handy Japanese. The categories are divided by platform, common questions are listed at the top.

Windows Phone

  • All Japanese characters display as boxes. How do I fix this?
    • Your phone likely doesn't have Japanese fonts installed. Open the options screen from the menu on the bottom of the main screen and select a display type of "Built-In" to use the embedded fonts or "Roman" to display in Roman letters.
  • How do I enable the Japanese Keyboard on Windows Phone (7.5+ only)?
    • Open the settings screen.
    • Select the keyboard option.
    • Scroll down to Japanese and select Japanese QWERTY (I find this layout is easier for non-native speakers).
    • That's it, there isn't even an OK button to press.
  • What does the "Extended Search" feature do?
    • The standard search system disregards entries that are significantly longer than the search term, this greatly improves performance. "Extended Search" disables this optimization and provides more complete results.

Windows Mobile

  • Some kanji display as boxes.
    • The included M+ fonts do not include all the kanji supported by Handy Japanese. You can get around this by installing the MS PGothic fonts. To do this you will need to connect your Windows Mobile device to a Windows computer and open the folder \Windows\Fonts on your device. Now open the folder C:\Windows\Fonts and find MS PGothic on the list of fonts. Now drag this onto the Window showing the fonts folder on the device and let go. The font will be copied to the device and after a reset, you should notice that Handy Japanese is now using the more complete MS PGothic fonts.
  • I can't figure out how to enter Japanese characters.
