I've been hard at work polishing up Handy Japanese for the Japanese launch of Windows Phone 7. I've tested the built in Japanese keyboard support extensively and it's led me to make some improvements in dictionary searches by Kanji characters.Version 2.3 comes with the following new/updated features:

  • Miscellaneous notes text is now a more visible/less ugly colour (orange instead of brown)
  • New algorithm for searching dictionary by Kanji, produces more and better results when searching for a portion of a word.
  • Updated dictionary and embedded fonts
  • Modified radical and stroke pickers that don't cut off part of the letters.
  • Improved scrolling performance, particularly in Windows Phone 7.5
  • Fixed Issues with parts of the interface occasionally disappearing when running under Windows Phone 7.5
  • Corrected an issue that might cause some Kanji details to not display on some handsets and in very rare cases cause crashes.

Handy Japanese for Windows Release

10. August 2011 22:47 by Jonathan Bruce in   //  Tags: ,   //   Comments (0)

Today, I'm releasing Handy Japanese for Windows. This release supports Windows XP, Vista, 7 and likely upcoming versions too. The .NET framework 4.0 is required but the installer will prompt you with directions if it's not already installed.

Astute readers will notice that the application version is 2.2. This is because I've been building the Windows version along with the Windows Phone version for quite some time. The main codebase is used for both versions, originally I created the Windows version for testing and my own personal use. I've decided to release it as a free download because the application now seems fairly mature and useful. Feel free to download and enjoy, this one's on me.

Japanese localisation is not available for the Windows version, mostly because I'm lazy.

Handy Japanese: Windows Mobile

Handy Japanese for Windows Mobile is now available in all English-Speaking regions, after a trial launch in the USA. A minor bug that caused the application to not display all radicals for the Kanji lookup has been corrected for the full launch

Unless I get a tonne of requests I'm not planning on making the Windows Mobile version available in other languages but the Windows Phone 7 version is already localized for Japanese so as soon as Microsoft chooses to launch in Japan I'm ready.
